Senior Career Units


Four Year Colleges:
University of California (UC)
• Application filing period is November 1- November 30, 2018
• Students can access the application starting August 1st and can save all work
• November 30, 2018 is the deadline for submission
• Application consists of transcript/grade, SAT/ACT Test Scores, and Responses to Personal Insight Questions 
• APPLY EARLY
• Needed in order to apply:
1. A-G eligible (with at least a 3.0 GPA)
2. Responses to Personal Insight Questions (Answer 4 out of 8)
3. SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Test (taken by December 2018)
4. SAT Subject Tests are OPTIONAL, but highly recommended/required by certain campus majors. Check with the campus(es) to which you are applying.
 
California State University (CalState)
• Applications available at www.calstate.edu/apply
• Application filing period is October 1- November 30, 2018
• November 30, 2018 is the deadline for submission
• Application consists of transcript/grade information and SAT/ACT Test Scores only-no personal statement
• APPLY EARLY
• Needed in order to apply:
1. A-G eligible (with at least a 2.0 GPA)
2. SAT Reasoning Test or ACT test (taken by December 2018 for most campuses, however a few require the tests to be taken by November 2018)

Private Schools/Out of State Schools
• Most applications will be available on the school’s website
• Deadlines will vary
• Most schools will have some type of essay or personal statement question
• It is recommended you contact the school you are interested in to make sure you have met all academic requirements
• Most schools will have an ACT or SAT requirement
• Many schools will require letters of recommendation from your teachers, counselors, etc. Make sure you provide your personal resume and a completed to your recommenders and give them at least 4 weeks before your deadline to compose a letter. You want the letter to be well written and well thought out. The more time you can give your teachers and counselors, the better the recommendation will be.
• The Common App www.commonapp.org (used by many private schools) requires a Secondary School Report (SSR). In addition to academic and school information, this form requires a letter of recommendation from the counselor. Please be sure to give your counselor at least 4 weeks notice, so that they may craft a quality letter.

Two Year (Community) Colleges:
• Launch application via www.californiacolleges.edu
• If approved by your parents, Senior Preview Days are available for each campus
• APPLY EARLY to the college of your choice as there are various steps you must complete prior to registering for classes
 
Trade School/Tech School:
• Contact the school you are considering in order to obtain application/deadline information
 
Financial Aid:
• All students attending higher education should be applying for financial aid
• The country’s universal financial aid application is called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
• The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov
• The filing period for the FAFSA is October 1, 2018- March 2, 2019
• March 2, 2019 is the deadline for submission.  Many colleges also have priority deadlines for financial aid, which are earlier than the FAFSA March 2 deadline.
  • Many private colleges and universities require an additional form, the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE.  This form must be completed if requested by the college or university you plan to attend.
  • The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE is available at https://student.collegeboard.org/profile
• APPLY AS EARLY AS YOU CAN (Starting October 1, 2018)
• AB540 students will fill out the Dream Act application in lieu of the FAFSA at www.dream.csac.ca.gov
• In addition to the FAFSA, make sure you fill out a CalGrant GPA Release Form- this form gives permission to PHS to submit your GPA to the state of California in order to be considered for CalGrant money.

Reminders from your Counselors


Deadlines for UC and CSU applications are due November 30th.  DO NOT wait until the last minute!!!

Majority of the UC and CSU campuses will take December SAT and ACT scores to determine eligibility.
  • SAT-December 1st. Last date to register will be November 2nd.
  • ACT-December 8th.  Last date to register will be November 2nd.

Students requesting letters of recommendations for private universities, counselors require a brag sheet to be completed and turned in at least four weeks prior to deadline.  Brag sheets can be found on the College Page.

Senioritis....DON'T GET IT!!! It is very important to keep up your grades and scores for graduation and final transcripts for college.
