The cause of McCandless's death in the film version is slightly different than the book. In the book, McCandless dies from ingesting moldy seeds from the wild potato plant after diligently making sure they were not from the sweet pea plant. In the film, McCandless believes he collects seeds from the wild potato but realizes that he has been collecting them from the toxic sweet pea plant instead only after he starts to get sick.


Why might the director have chosen to make this change? Based on this change, how might a viewer characterize McCandless if they only watched the film version and had not read the book?
